BMI Formula

BMI is calculated using the following formula:

BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m) × height (m))

For example, a person who weighs 70kg and is 1.75m tall would have a BMI of 22.9 (70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75)).

Understanding BMI Limitations

While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has some limitations:

  • Muscle mass: BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. Athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI but low body fat.
  • Age differences: BMI may underestimate body fat in older adults who have lost muscle mass.
  • Ethnic variations: Some ethnic groups may have different health risks at the same BMI levels.
  • Body fat distribution: BMI doesn't account for where fat is located (e.g., abdominal fat is more risky).
  • Pregnancy: BMI calculations aren't appropriate for pregnant women.

For a more complete health assessment, consider other measurements like waist circumference, body fat percentage, and consultation with a healthcare provider.
